Self Motivation and Productivity is Key
If you follow me on any form of social media, I have announced something very exciting! Drum roll please….. I am going FREELANCE! Yes, I have registered as self employed, and made a huge step in my life. I am excited but scared at the same time, which is the weirdest feeling! With that said, this week has been crazy! A good crazy because I am busy. Two commissioned pieces, and also a bespoke piece to gain exposure, you could say my little fingers are going to be tired of typing! My new life as a freelancer ( she says after doing it for a few days…) is beginning to show me how productive I need to be and have become. So I thought I’d share a few top tips on how to be productive. However, I will let you in to a little secret, I still slob out on the couch and watch Love Island like everyone else.
Its an enigma to me, but I actually think I am getting the hang of it. there are loads of distractions in the modern life of a millennial (thank you social media, we really appreciate it), but here are my top tips to blocking out the scrolling and getting sh*% done.
Pick Up That Phone
Yes, you read that correctly. Sounds counter productive, but bear with me. No one has the time to sit around and write to-do lists any more. I try to, but I end up overestimating how much I can do in a day. Asana is a mobile app for making project lists and to-do lists. No, this is not sponsored, I’m just a geek who has fallen in love with this app. By splitting things into projects I can see what tasks need to be done ASAP, whilst not over facing myself with other not so urgent tasks.
Do The Thing That Bugs You First
People still remain divided on this, and I guess it depends on you as a person, but I find doing the thing I hate the most first gets it out of the way. As soon as the hard part is done you can move onto the easier and more fun things that need doing! Don’t fool yourself by doing lots of little tasks that are meaningless. That one annoying task being done motivates you and enables you to do more!
Make Your Bed
No, your parents have not sponsored me to say this. I’m sure I’m not the only one who rolls out of bed, and lies to myself that ‘I’m not making my bed because it will put off dust mites’. Although that may be true, (Google it if you don’t believe me!) what if I told you making your bed encourages productivity. I know right, this chick is crazy telling me to make my bed and I’ll be productive, but seriously this advice comes from the Navy! In a speech to his Graduates, a Navy seal stated:
If you make your bed every morning you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride and it will encourage you to do another task.
That sense of pride and achievement is what fuels us through the day! It makes us feel a little bit more like we are succeeding, rather than struggling in the big wide world of adulthood.
So in a nutshell, make to do lists on your phone, do the annoying thing first, and make your bed. The perfect recipe to productivity.
